I saw my Lady weep,
And sorrow proud to be advanced so:
In those fair eyes where all perfections keep,
Her face was full of woe,
But such a woe (believe me) as wins more hearts,
Than Mirth can do with her enticing parts.

Sorrow was there made fair,
And passion wise, tears a delightful thing,
Silence beyond all speech a wisdom rare,
She made her sighs to sing,
And all things with so sweet a sadness move,
As made my heart at once both grieve and love.

O fairer than aught else,
The world can show, leave off in time to grieve,
Enough, enough, your joyful looks excels,
Tears kills the heart believe.
O strive not to be excellent in woe,
Which only breeds your beauty´s overthrow.

Kommentar: Das wohl berühmteste Lied Dowlands, das unter dem Namen Lachrimae antiquae in seinem instrumentalen Werk Lachrimae 1604 veröffentlicht wurde.

Where nights black bird her sad infamy sings,

Kommentar: Ein ungewöhnliches Lied, das zunächst die Minima als Viertelnote, später als Achtelnote benutzt.

Aufbau: d-Moll, 3/2 Takt, 3 Strophen.
Kommentar: Trotz 3/2 Takt muss ab der zweiten Note in 4/2 gedacht werden. Nach den drei Strophen folgt ein zweizeiliger "Envoi". Der Text hat die Form eines Sonnets.

Be dumb vain tongue, words are but flatt'ring winds,
Break heart and bleed for there is no receipt,
To purge inconstancy from most men´s minds.

And if thine ears false heralds to thy heart,
Convey into thy head hopes to obtain,
Then tell thy hearing thou art deaf by art,
Now love is art that wonted to be plain.

Now none is bald except they see his brains,
Affection is not known till one be dead,

Kommentar: Rondo Form. Der Refrain stammt von Sir Philip Sidneys Arcadia (1580), der Rest vermutlich von Robert, Earl of Essex. Das Lied ist "Master Hugh Holland" gewidmet, der einleitende Gedichte in einigen von Shakespeares Werken geschrieben hat.

If floods of tears could cleanse my follies past,
And smokes of sighs might sacrifice for sin,
If groaning cries might salve my fault at last,
Or endless moan, for error pardon win,
Then would I cry, weep, sigh, and ever moan,
Mine errors, faults, sins, follies, past and gone.

I see my hopes must wither in their bud,
I see my favours are no lasting flow´rs
I see that words will breed no better good,
Than loss of time and light´ning but at hours,
Thus when I see, then thus I say therefore,

Fine knacks for ladies, cheap choice brave and new,
Good pennyworths but money cannot move,
I keep a fair but for the fair to view,
A beggar may be liberal of love,
Though all my wares be trash the heart is true.

Great gifts are guiles and look for gifts again,
My trifles come, as treasures from my mind,
It is a precious jewel to be plain,
Sometimes in shell the Orient´s pearls we find,
Of others take a sheaf, of me a grain.

Within this pack pins points laces and gloves,
And divers toys fitting a country fair,
But in my heart where duty serves and loves,
Turtles and twins, Court´s brood, a heav´nly pair,
Happy the heart that thinks of no removes. 


Now cease my wandring eyes

Strange beauties to admire,
In change least comfort lies,
Long joys yield long desire.
One faith one love,
Makes our frail pleasures eternal, and in sweetness prove,

If all one soul must love,
Two loves must be denied,

By faith and merit united cannot remove,

Kommentar: Das Lied scheint geeignet für eine Theaterszene, gesungen von einer Tochter.

Do my father´s spirit right,
Soundings baleful let me borrow,

White as Lillies was hir face

Kommentar: Ein sehr kurzes Lied, das die vielen Wiederholungen notwendig zu machen scheint.

White as lilies was her face,
When she smiled,
She beguiled,
Quitting faith with foul disgrace,
Virtue service thus neglected,
Heart with sorrows hath infected.

When I swore my heart her own,
She disdained,
I complained,
Yet she left me overthrown,
Careless of my bitter grieving,
Ruthless bent to no relieving.

Vows and oaths and faith assur'd,
Constant ever,
Changing never,
Yet she could not be procur'd,
To believe my pains exceeding,
From her scant neglect proceeding.

O that love should have the art,
By surmises,
And disguises,
To destroy a faithful heart,
Or that wanton-looking women,
Should reward their friends as foeman.

All in vain is ladies' love,
Quickly choosed,

Kommentar: Ein sehr ruhiges Lied, das in einigen Quellen als dreistrophiges Lied auftaucht, zusammengesetzt aus den letzten vier Zeilen aus der ersten und zweiten Strophe.

Of love and lovers´ wrong,
Unto the fairest lass that trod on grass,
And thus began his song.
Since love and fortune will, I honour still,
Your fair and lovely eye,

Kommentar: Der Text stammt von Fulke Greville. Dowland lässt die zweite Strophe aus.

In Court where wits excels
Hath set defiance,
Fortune and Love hath sworn,
That they were never born,
Of one alliance.

Fortune swears, weakest hearts
The book of Cupid´s arts
Turn with her wheel,
Senses themselves shall prove

This discord I begot
Atheist, that Honour not
Nature thought good,

Kommentar: Einige Sammlungen geben ein eher langsames Tempo ohne Beachtung der Taktstriche an. Der Rhythmus erscheint als 2/2, die Viertelnote zu Beginn lässt ein hohes Tempo erwarten.

Kommentar: Ein herrliches Lied, das einige sonderbare Textstellen beinhaltet. Dowland gibt im Refrain der Viola eine optionale Diskantstimme.

Pleas'd or smiling like mild May all flow'ring,
When skies blue silk meadows carpets be,
Her speeches notes of that night-bird that singeth,

All conceit in humour seen.

Say then who is Humour now.
